L-3 Infrared Products Launches 17 Micron Technology

The Next Generation of Uncooled Thermal Imaging

DALLAS, Texas, October 27, 2009 – L-3 Infrared Products (IRP) announces the launch of the first commercially available, high-resolution Thermal-Eye Series 17-640 thermal imager. The advanced image processing technology offers greater thermal sensitivity, extensive customization, and sharper images with a unique wafer-level packaging that is the smallest and lightest in the world.

“The launch of our 17-640 microbolometer technology underscores L-3’s commitment to developing products that enable our customers to compete in a market demanding increased capability and reduced system size and weight,” said Don Rodrigues, vice president and general manager of L-3 IRP. “This unmatched technology will enhance our product portfolio and expand the application space.”

As part of the “Series 17” product family that includes the 1024 and 320 17µm technologies, the 17-640 has a high-performance amorphous silicon uncooled IR sensor with a fast response time and advanced imaging processing . The reduced size also increases flexibility. Optics can be smaller and lighter and still achieve the same range performance as a 25µm offering.

Available in three configurations, the 17-640 can be purchased with or without a lens in analog or digital format. The dual mini no-lens configuration is ideal for solutions that require a small form factor.  For optics, there are three field-of-view options: 14°, 28°, and 55° lens.  The user interface is sophisticated and designed for OEM customization.  It has a programmable electronic zoom sequence, expansion port for video processing and real-time control of touch up parameters.

The compact and more advanced 17-640 thermal imaging module creates a path for smaller hands-free systems, weapon sights or fixed cameras. “For military applications, range and resolution are as important as size, weight and power. The 17-640 gives L-3 Infrared Products a significant advantage in the thermal imaging market due to its image quality, lightweight materials, compact design and range of detection,” said Russ Camacho, vice president of sales and marketing.
